Excuse me while I step up on my soapbox for a minute.  I have to rant about something that’s driving me absolutely nuts.

Why do people all of a sudden seem to think it’s okay to run red lights?  I can’t even tell you how often I’ve seen that happen lately.  Do these people not realize they are running the risk of taking someone’s life simply because they don’t want to take a few extra seconds out of their life to stop!

About two weeks ago a seventeen year old boy lost his life in an intersection about a mile from my house because some woman decided to keep on going right through the red light.  That boy will never get to grow up.  His family will never see him grow up.  All because this woman was so stupid and so selfish that she couldn’t take a little bit longer and actually stop like she was supposed to.

The scary thing is that people do that at this intersection all the time!  And I’m not just talking about going through when it’s yellow but it turns red before you get through.  I’m sure that’s happened to most of us since some yellow lights are long and some are short.  I’m talking about running it when it’s red before you even get to the intersection.  Why would someone do that??  The really scary thing is that this intersection is by truck stops and I’ve seen lots of semi-trucks running red lights as well.  How much of a chance do you think a car would have against a monster vehicle like that?!?!

I’ve always been pretty good about obeying traffic laws but I have become even more aware of things since our daughter began driving about six months ago.  When I see people do these things around me I always wonder what would have happened if my daughter had been driving.  It’s scary!  I know it’s not the right thing to do but I want to yank these people out of their cars and yell at them and try to get through their heads the fact that they are endangering people’s lives when they do that!

You know, I don’t necessarily think that the accident rate for teenagers is so high because they are driving recklessly or carelessly.  I think a lot of it is caused by adults who are so wrapped up in their own little world that the don’t pay attention to anything but themselves.  These poor kids without much experience don’t have a chance – just like that seventeen year old boy – when confronted with situations like these.  They don’t have the reflexes yet or the experience to always know what to do.

So, the whole point of this is – if you are driving and you come to an intersection where the light is red or yellow PLEASE STOP!  You might just save someone’s life by doing so.

Okay, I’m getting off my soap box now.  Thanks for putting up with it.

I just wanted to let you know that I am going to be away from the computer until next Tuesday – or maybe Monday night! :) (Actually, by the time you read this I’ll already be gone. ) My husband and I are celebrating our 17th anniversary this weekend by going on a little vacation and we have decided to leave the computer at home. Hopefully I’ll survive!

I will continue my series that I’m working on when I get back and I will also catch up on any comments that are left (including any that might be in moderation). So, thanks in advance for your patience!

I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day weekend!

There aren’t many places in the world where I wouldn’t want to go – maybe not North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Iraq – those just don’t seem like touristy places you know? ;) I’m a traveler and I love to see what the world looks like in lots of different areas. I’ve traveled around the US quite a bit and have really enjoyed it. I’ve been to every state east of the Mississippi except New Jersey and Wisconsin but still have nine states to visit west of the Mississippi and I’m hoping to get to all of them eventually! So far, Canada is the only country I’ve been to outside of the US but I’m hoping to be able to one day change that. If I got that opportunity these are the places that would probably be high on my list: Israel – Jerusalem in particular but other areas as well, Italy, France, England, Ireland, Greece, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. Of course, given the opportunity, there are a lot of other places I’m sure I would enjoy traveling through but those are the ones high on my list. What about you – if you could travel anywhere where would it be?

I recently attended a conference where Jeff Myers, of Passing the Baton International, was the keynote speaker. If you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak you should!! He was fantastic! He had several sessions that I attended, the main one being Passing the Baton – a message you can purchase from his website. The blurb on the website for this message says, “ In three years of earthly ministry, Jesus took twelve ordinary men, trained them to change the world, and they did it. On this recording we’ll look at the seven things Jesus did-and trained his followers to do-to personally and intentionally equip culture-shaping leaders. This eye-opening talk has mobilized audiences around the world to rise up and embrace Jesus’ life-on-life model of discipling all nations of the earth.” Here are the 7 things he lists:

1. Jesus led based on total obedience to God

2. Jesus led based on his anointing

3. Jesus led based on his deep love for his followers

4. Jesus led based on his intercession for them

5. Jesus led based on his trust in God’s work in them

6. Jesus led based on his transparent with-ness (yes that’s how that’s supposed to read :) )

7. Jesus led based on primary concern for character development.

At the conference he was speaking to us as parents and how to teach our children. We need to be leading and equipping our children to be Christian leaders in their world. If our children aren’t equipped to be leaders then they will more than likely become followers of the world. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they all have to go out and be nationally recognized leaders but they do need to know how to stand up for what they believe, how to define what they believe, how to defend what they believe, and how to stick to what they believe. They will very easily be persuaded to the other side of we don’t do our jobs and teach them well!

He has a great recommended reading list that he shared. I’ve found several at the library and have been looking through them. There are some really good books on the list! I would recommend checking them out!
