28 ways to save on food

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

I found a great article the other day at Money Talks News that shared 28 ways to save on food.  Many of them I already try to put into practice such as… don’t shop when you’re hungry, buy generics, make stuff from scratch rather than buying prepared, etc., but there were many great tips that I hadn’t thought of in awhile or were new to me.  Check it out and see what you think!  Maybe it can help you save money at the grocery store. :)

Learning about giveaways!

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

I have a book giveaway coming up this week and while doing some research to figure out the best way to do said giveaway (because I’ve never done that before) I found this blog called Mommies with Cents. They have a great giveaway going on right now for the 2010 Entertainment book!  I love those books and would love to win it so I’m entering the contest.  :)

So, I’m learning about giving books away and trying to win some for myself!  haha!  You ought to stop over there and check it out – it’s a pretty cute blog!  You don’t have to enter the drawing though – I don’t want TOO many people entering and ruining my chance of winning.  ;)   j/k!

The Dinner Solution

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

Has anybody heard of this program or used it?  I first read about it here.  It looks really cool!  It helps you make menus, grocery lists, balanced meals, and more!  The only drawback is the price.  :(   It’s $59.99 and, while it’s probably well worth it, I just can’t afford to spend that much on something extra right now.  I’d love to hear thoughts from anyone who’s used it though!!

I wanted to share a little more about household management from the material I talked about the other day.  There are so many things that are kind of common sense things but  a lot of times we just don’t think of them until someone points them out to us.  Since I loved so many of the ones I learned I wanted to share them with you.  Some of these things are things I do and some were things they suggested.  All of them work well for me!

Laundry:

1. Run one load of laundry a day if possible so that it doesn’t pile up and you don’t have to spend an entire day doing it.

2. The expensive detergents are really better.  I know some people have allergies and such and have to buy certain kinds but if you don’t you can use the cheapest detergent and it works just as well.  That’s what I do!  :)

Grocery Shopping:

1. Make a menu and grocery list before you go

2. Saving Dinner and Kraft have great ideas/menus that you can use for meal planning.

3. Keep a notepad hanging on the side of your fridge and as you run out of things write it down so that you remember to get them all next time you go to the store.

Gifts:

1. Keep a list of what your family/friends like so when it’s time to buy a gift for them you can refer to the list for good ideas.

2. Stock up on good generic gifts when you see them on sale and keep them on hand for when you need them.

Car organization:

(I loved these ideas!  It has made it very handy in the car!)

1. Keep grocery sacks in the car for trash bags or muddy feet.

2. Keep a small basket with items like wipes, hand sanitizer, pens/pencils, etc. for quick and easy use when you need them.

3. Keep insulated grocery bags in the car for when you need to grab things at the store that are cold while running errands.  They usually keep things cold for a couple of hours or more.

Kitchen organization:

1. Keep a large decorative in your kitchen to hold recyclables until they are ready to go outside to the recycling bucket.  It takes up less space than a trash can and looks nicer too. ;)

2. If you are limited in drawer space, get a cute little basket for your potholders – then you have freed up a drawer plus your potholders can sit on the counter in the basket in very easy reach of the oven!

A special request

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (4)

Hey, all!  How is everyone out there in bloggy land?  Long time no see around here right! :)   Well, life just keeps me pretty busy.  Plus, I’ve been having a little more fun with my facebook page lately so I’ve kind of neglected this. :)   Anyway, I have a question for you.  I just recently got a Sam’s card again (after MANY years without one) and I was wondering if any of you have a “must have” list from Sam’s.  Are there any things there that you think are super great deals?  Anything that is better to buy there than anywhere else?  If you have some ideas I’d love to hear them!!

And I actually have a couple of other ideas for posts so you may even see me on here again soon!  ;)

Snapfish

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (4)

Have you guys heard about Snapfish?  I wanted to order some prints this weekend so I started looking online to see if there was somewhere I could do it other than Walmart.  I had heard of this site before but never really looked into it too much.  Well, this weekend I really looked at it and it’s really cool.  You can upload your pictures from your computer to their site and not only can you order the prints but you can store them online as well.  I was able to upload a set of pictures and share them with some people rather than trying to e-mail the pictures to them and bogging down their inbox.  The pictures are cheap too – it was something like 9 cents for each print!  So, if you need to order some pictures head on over to Snapfish and get started!  :)

Do you find yourself wishing that you could be a stay-at-home mom but you don’t think you can afford it? I’ve been writing a series about how you can afford to stay home because so many women seem to think they have to work.  You really don’t if you can learn how to lower your expenses.  On previous days I’ve mostly shared ideas on how to bring down your basic expenses. Today I thought I’d share some ideas with you for how to save money on normal, everyday things that you might not have thought of.  They aren’t in any particular order – I just jotted them down as they came to me.

1. Instead of taking your kids to get a haircut and spending upwards of $10 every time invest in a clipper set and/or a good pair of hair cutting scissors and cut it yourself. It is especially easy to cut boys hair that’s kept short. We have a clipper set and I cut my son’s hair and my husband’s hair so that we don’t have to pay someone else to do it. I realize that it could be a little harder with girls who have a certain style though. If you must pay someone else try to find a beauty school, a vo-tech, or a discount place (such as Supercuts) to get her hair cut and you will spend far less than you would in a salon.

2. Rather than going to the movie theater to watch movies, wait until they come out on video and rent them. Our family rarely goes to the movies because when we do it’s at least $20 just for the tickets. And that’s at the “cheap” time or at the “cheap” theater! Movies used to take a long time to get to video so you really had to have patience but now it seems like within a couple of months of leaving the theater they are out on video! We like to rent from Redbox. It’s only $1 a night for a movie that we can all enjoy in the comfort of our own living room! We can also have all the pop and popcorn we want for a fraction of what the theaters charge!

3. Shop at thrift stores and/or garage sales for things that you’d like to have but aren’t a necessity. You’d be amazed at what you can find! A large portion of the things in my house that are decorative I found at thrift stores and garage sales. Much of it looks just like it would have if I’d purchased it from the store too!

4. Limit the number of times you dine at a restaurant during the month. If you do decide to go to dinner, rather than ordering a dinner for each member of the family, pair up and share a meal. Restaurants are making portion sizes so huge that it’s way too much food for one person to eat anyway (at least it should be!) so rather than eating too much or having food left on your plate – share with the person next to you. Our family of four does this most of the time if we go out. We order two (sometimes three) dishes and then we share them between us. Our bill is so much lower this way!  Also, if you all drink water when you dine at a restaurant you will save almost $2 a person. Drinks have gotten ridiculously expensive lately!

5. Refuse to pay full price for things. Most stores have at least something on sale all the time. If there’s something you need, watch for it to go on sale and then purchase it. Don’t purchase it while it’s full price. Clearance racks are a great place to find good bargains!

6. If you have an Aldi near you – use it! They have great prices on their groceries and you can save a lot of money by getting everything you can there! They don’t carry everything like a full grocery store does but they do have most things. I always make my list and then go to Aldi first to get everything I can off my list and then I go to the grocery store to get whatever I couldn’t find at Aldi. The savings is well worth going to two different stores.

7. Continuing with the grocery theme – don’t by name brand! Generics are so much cheaper and most of the time just as good. I say most of the time because there have been a few things that I’ve bought in the generic brand that I wasn’t impressed with at all. For the most part though I get generic brands for almost everything though.  If you really like name brands then cut and use coupons. You can save a lot of money with the coupons available in the Sunday paper every week.

8. Sign up for rewards programs. We have shopped at Best Buy for our appliances, cameras, TVs, etc. and they have a great reward program. After spending a certain amount of money with them they send out rewards certificates that you can redeem in the store. I have $10 in certificates waiting to be used right now! They also send out coupons with the certificates for a percentage off on certain things.

9. Try not to buy convenience foods. The more food you can make from scratch the more money you will save. There are so many things that can easily be made from scratch but we are so used to picking up a packaged item at the store that we don’t even think about it! For example: cookies, cakes, bread, biscuits, pancakes, and waffles just to name a few! It’s so much healthier if we make it ourselves too.  This is an area that I’ve really been working on lately.  I’ve never bought much of the convenience foods but I’m starting to learn that there are so many more things that I could make from scratch!  It’s kind of fun too!  :)

10.  Don’t pay for cable TV that you aren’t using.  I know a lot of people cut out cable TV completely.  Ours isn’t one of those families.  Not because we like to watch tons of TV – we actually watch very little – but most of the shows we like are on cable.  It seems like network television has just gotten trashier and trashier and the higher quality TV shows are on cable now.  So, if you’re like us, figure out which channels you regularly like to watch and make sure that your package isn’t full of channels that you never watch.

This list is by no means exhaustive – it’s just a few things that you could do to start saving money.  There are countless ways you can change your style of living to reflect a change in priorities so that you can be a stay-at-home mom!

If any of you have any other ideas that haven’t been shared already please feel free to do so!  Every little bit helps!  :)

Do you like a good bargain?

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (9)

I know I do!!! I thought maybe we should all pool our knowledge of where to find a good bargain. I know that some things are going to be local only but some places are national chains that others just may not know about. For example – I just recently found out about Steve and Barry’s. This place has some REALLY good deals on stuff! We went to one while we were traveling at Christmas time and they were having a sale where nothing in the store was over $8 or something like that!! So, since those had obviously been around and I was clueless I started wondering what else might be out there that I don’t know about. So please share your ideas here of where to get a good bargain!!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Local thrift stores including: Goodwill and Salvation Army

Gordman’s – this is a regular store but they sell things cheaper than department stores and they have good clearance and sale prices.

Michael’s – craft store that puts things on sale frequently and usually has a 40% off coupon in the paper.

Ross & TJ Maxx & Marshalls – these are stores that I don’t use enough but I know they have good prices. I just need to remember to get there! :)

Overstock.com is a great place to find bargains online.

eBay and Half.com are also great places to find really good deals on stuff.

Of course I’ve shared this with you before but and are GREAT places to get books, CDs and DVDs at great deals! (And if you follow my link and join I get a referral credit. )

Homeschool Classifieds is a great place to find used curriculum at a good price.

Redbox is a great way to rent movies. If you haven’t checked into this and you like to rent movies it’s a definite MUST!

Amazon is good way to find things at a discount. (If you follow the link for books I’ve recommended on my blog and buy them I get a commission too. )

This list could probably go on and on but those are the ones that pop into my mind first. If you have some ideas to share please do so!! :)

Just to let you know…

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (4)

I’m not sure how many people read my blog through my actual site and see the stuff in my columns to the right so for that reason I wanted to post something here that I just added over there. :)

One of the things I’ve done in order to try to generate some income is to become an Amazon.com associate. What this means is that if I recommend a book, movie, or cd and it’s highlighted and takes you to the Amazon website, if you buy it through that link I will get a percentage from your purchase. Now, by all means, if you can get it at the library or find it for a better deal elsewhere do so!! But if you do decide to buy something through Amazon that I’ve recommend I would love for you to do it through me. :)

P.S. I don’t have everything I’ve recommended linked up yet but I will be working on it as time allows.

Garage sale tips

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (6)

Those of you who regularly read my blog know that I LOVE garage sales! Well, I thought I would use the knowledge I have acquired from many years of garage sale-ing (that’s what we call it but I’m not sure how to spell it!?!?) and give you some garage sale tips in case you might be planning to have one and you’re not familiar with how they work.

GETTING PEOPLE TO THE SALE

1. Large and/or colorful signs work well to draw traffic to your garage sale.

2. DO NOT write a bunch of words (street address, directions, items for sale, etc.) on your small sign – it CAN’T be read while driving past it in the car!

3. DO write garage or yard sale on your sign in large, bold letters.

4. Arrows pointing towards your sale work just as well if not better than writing your address on the sign. (This is especially true if there are several signs on the same street corner – people are NOT going to remember all those house numbers and street names!)

5. If the customer needs to make a turn to get to your sale make sure you have a sign on that corner directing them to turn.

6. If your sale is deep into the neighborhood (i.e. you have to pass a lot of streets before getting to your sale) you should put signs up occasionally saying “this way” or “up ahead” or something so that the person knows that they are going the right way and they don’t give up.

AT YOUR SALE

7. Be friendly! Smile and say hi! It’s so much more welcoming than being ignored.

8. When someone purchases something, pay attention to them and say thank you. I went to a garage sale recently where I wanted to buy something and the lady sat there talking on the phone. I walked up to her with my money and she took it and never looked at me or said a word to me. How rude!

9. Have things clearly marked with a price (as much as possible). There have been many times that I might have bought something if it had been marked but I will pick up several things and nothing will have a price so I leave. People don’t want to keep asking, “how much is this?” over and over again so if you can’t mark each thing come up with a price list or group things on your tables by price or something.

10. Expect people to offer less but realize that you can say no. For some that’s the fun of garage sales and some people will mark stuff knowing that they will be offered less. So don’t be afraid to say no but mark stuff knowing that will happen and be willing to negotiate.

11. Organize things on tables and racks – don’t just throw stuff all over the driveway or set it out in boxes for people to dig through. If people have to dig through an entire box of junk to see what’s in it they probably won’t look. If it’s laid out nice and neat then they can see it all and find exactly what they want.

12. Please, please, please don’t sell stuff that’s just gross  (e.g. old dirty mattresses, old dirty pillows with slobber stains all over them eewww!, clothes with stains – and I don’t just mean a little stain here or there – I mean gross stains! or anything else that’s just gross – you get the idea).

13. If you have something that’s worth a lot of money or that you won’t sell for fairly cheap you may be better off putting an ad in the paper for that item. Not many people go to garage sales to find something they will spend $500 to $1000 for!

14. And last but definitely not least – please put prices on things that are reasonable FOR A GARAGE SALE! I can’t tell you how many garage sales I’ve been to where people expect to sell something for the same price they paid for it brand new. I’ve even seen stuff priced higher than what it would cost for a new one at the store!!! It’s frustrating to walk up to a garage sale and see things marked for five dollars that you would find marked for a quarter or a dollar at other garage sales.
