At our house we love to watch movies and summer time is a great time to do that since there’s no school work to do and we don’t have to get up by any certain time most days. This last week we rented several movies from Redbox. If you’ve never rented from one of those before you should check it out! Anyway, the movies we rented were:

Marley & Me – this was a great movie. I was really impressed with the way they showed a family sticking together and working things out – especially coming from Hollywood!

Taken – this was a pretty good movie as far as the action and all that but the theme was pretty disturbing. It’s so sad that things like that really do take place in this world.

Mall Cop – we actually saw this in the theater too – this movie is awesome! So fun!!

Way of War - I usually won’t even watch movies that are rated R but my husband wanted a war movie so we got it. Big mistake. I actually left the room before 30 minutes went by – it didn’t make any sense and was very confusing. It was just a stupid movie. My hubby watched it to the end and he said it was a complete waste of time.

Bride Wars – this movie was pretty good. It was kind of slow in the beginning but picked up later and was pretty funny.

Valkyrie - this movie was interesting. Again, it’s one my husband wanted so I watched it with him. I typically like movies that are based on a true story, as this one is, because I enjoy being able to learn about historical things through stories like this. The bad thing is that we knew how it was going to end since we know how it unfolded in history. Other than that it was a pretty good movie.

Anybody have any recommendations for this week’s movie time?

I posted about Ben Stein and the movie he’s creating called “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed” awhile back but came across this article recently and wanted to share it. Here’s an excerpt from the article – a question/answer I thought was very interesting:

AFA: How have many of the Darwinists responded?
Stein: Oh, they’re very angry people, they’re very angry. … [Y]ou know what I wonder – if they’re so sure that they’re right, why do they have to be so angry and defensive about it? If their position is unassailably correct, if there’s no doubt whatsoever that they’re right, why do they have to be so angry and attack anyone who even questions [Darwinism]? … We’re just asking a question, could it be [that] Darwinism doesn’t have all the answers? People are acting as if we are coming in and burning down their universities. They’re going crazy. …

Click the link above and read the whole article! It’s very interesting!!

I know I do!!! I thought maybe we should all pool our knowledge of where to find a good bargain. I know that some things are going to be local only but some places are national chains that others just may not know about. For example – I just recently found out about Steve and Barry’s. This place has some REALLY good deals on stuff! We went to one while we were traveling at Christmas time and they were having a sale where nothing in the store was over $8 or something like that!! So, since those had obviously been around and I was clueless I started wondering what else might be out there that I don’t know about. So please share your ideas here of where to get a good bargain!!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Local thrift stores including: Goodwill and Salvation Army

Gordman’s – this is a regular store but they sell things cheaper than department stores and they have good clearance and sale prices.

Michael’s – craft store that puts things on sale frequently and usually has a 40% off coupon in the paper.

Ross & TJ Maxx & Marshalls – these are stores that I don’t use enough but I know they have good prices. I just need to remember to get there!

Overstock.com is a great place to find bargains online.

eBay and Half.com are also great places to find really good deals on stuff.

Of course I’ve shared this with you before but and are GREAT places to get books, CDs and DVDs at great deals! (And if you follow my link and join I get a referral credit. )

Homeschool Classifieds is a great place to find used curriculum at a good price.

Redbox is a great way to rent movies. If you haven’t checked into this and you like to rent movies it’s a definite MUST!

Amazon is good way to find things at a discount. (If you follow the link for books I’ve recommended on my blog and buy them I get a commission too. )

This list could probably go on and on but those are the ones that pop into my mind first. If you have some ideas to share please do so!!

What an awesome weekend I just had. Christmas time is such an enjoyable time of year for me and this weekend was at the top for things I like to do at Christmas. Yesterday I stayed in all day – I can’t imagine getting out on the Saturday before Christmas and shopping! Anyway, I stayed in all day and prepared all kinds of good food for our Christmas celebrations. My kids and I also made cookies and cut them into Christmas shapes and then decorated them and ate them. (We didn’t eat all of them! Just a few.) While I was cooking and baking I listened to some of my favorite Christmas music – Selah’s “Rose of Bethlehem,” Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve and Other Stories,” and Josh Groban’s “Noel” among others. The Josh Groban CD was special too because I just heard it for the first time in a store on Friday and really liked it and my sweet hubby went out yesterday morning and bought it for me. He spoils me so. At the end of the day when I was completely exhausted I cozied up on the couch and watched “Christmas with the Kranks” – one of my favorite Christmas movies.

Today started with my mom coming over and we made a FABULOUS breakfast that we all enjoyed. Did I say it was FABULOUS? After that we went to church and enjoyed a great morning of worship. We had a guest music group and they were really good! Our pastor is an awesome teacher and always has a great message and he didn’t disappoint this morning. After church we headed back to our house and pulled out all the good food we had prepared ahead of time and made a couple of last minute things and then we enjoyed a great lunch together. Next were the presents! We exchanged gifts with my mom and had a lot of fun watching each other open them. After my mom left I cleaned up the kitchen and then went and cozied up in my bed and watched a movie. After I finish up on here I think I’ll go right back in there and get cozy again.

I’ve added two new links to my site that I wanted to share with you.

CD swap is a site where you can list CDs from your collection that you no longer want and in exchange you can request CDs that other people have listed that you want to add to your collection. It’s a great way to eliminate the CDs you no longer listen to and find new music that you’re interested in! If you use my link here or on my sidebar and join, I’ll get a credit added to my account so if you decide to join I would appreciate the referral!

DVD swap works just as CD swap only with movies! There are a lot of great movies listed and it’s cheaper than renting! Then, if you decide you like it – you can keep it. If you don’t want to keep it, list it again and earn yourself another credit.

And of course I still have paperback swap linked on here. I have been a part of this book club for over a year now and it has been amazing! I have sent out almost fifty books and have requested almost thirty! It’s a great way to add to your library as well as share books that you are no longer using with others who want them.

So, check these out and join today!

I don’t know how many of you have heard of this new movie coming out and how it’s very anti-God. I heard about it a couple of weeks ago and knew that it was something our family wouldn’t want to see. A friend of mine forwarded this to me so I thought I’d share it here in case some of you aren’t familiar with it. One thought I had about this guy though – if you don’t believe God exists (which is what he claims as an atheist) how can you say you want to kill Him? Can something that doesn’t exist (in his opinion) be killed? Kind of an odd statement to me…

There will be a new children’s movie out in December called “The Golden Compass.” The movie has been described as “atheism for kids” and is based on the first book of a trilogy entitled “His Dark Materials” that was written by Phillip Pullman. Pullman is a militant atheist and secular humanist who despises C.S. Lewis and the “Chronicles of Narnia.” His motivation for writing this trilogy was specifically to counteract Lewis’ symbolism of Christ that are portrayed in the Narnia series.

Clearly, Pullman’s main objective is to bash Christianity and promote atheism. Pullman left little doubt about his intentions when he said in a 2003 interview that “my books are about killing God” and in a 2001 interview he said he was “trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief.” He has even stated that he wants to “kill God in the minds of children.” It has been said of Pullman that he is “the writer the atheists would be praying for, if atheists prayed.”

While “The Golden Compass” movie itself may seem mild and innocent, the books are a much different story. In the trilogy, a young streetwise girl becomes enmeshed in an epic struggle to ultimately defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God. Another character, an ex-nun, describes Christianity as “a very powerful and convincing mistake.” In the final book, characters representing Adam and Eve eventually kill God, who at times is called YAHWEH. Each book in the trilogy gets progressively worse regarding Pullman’s hatred of Jesus Christ.

“The Golden Compass” is set to premier on December 7, during the Christmas season, and will probably be heavily advertised. Promoters hope that unsuspecting parents will take their children to see the movie, that they will enjoy the movie, and that the children will want the books for Christmas.

If you are a Christian, please consider a boycott of the movie and the books. Also, pass this information along to everyone you know. This will help to educate parents, so that they will know the agenda of the movie.

Here is a website for more info on the movie…

Before I take my kids to a movie I check plugged in – it’s a great website with movie reviews.

“A child’s mind is like wet cement. What touches it makes an impression.”
