Why are people so selfish???

By momlovesbeingathome

Excuse me while I step up on my soapbox for a minute.  I have to rant about something that’s driving me absolutely nuts.

Why do people all of a sudden seem to think it’s okay to run red lights?  I can’t even tell you how often I’ve seen that happen lately.  Do these people not realize they are running the risk of taking someone’s life simply because they don’t want to take a few extra seconds out of their life to stop!

About two weeks ago a seventeen year old boy lost his life in an intersection about a mile from my house because some woman decided to keep on going right through the red light.  That boy will never get to grow up.  His family will never see him grow up.  All because this woman was so stupid and so selfish that she couldn’t take a little bit longer and actually stop like she was supposed to.

The scary thing is that people do that at this intersection all the time!  And I’m not just talking about going through when it’s yellow but it turns red before you get through.  I’m sure that’s happened to most of us since some yellow lights are long and some are short.  I’m talking about running it when it’s red before you even get to the intersection.  Why would someone do that??  The really scary thing is that this intersection is by truck stops and I’ve seen lots of semi-trucks running red lights as well.  How much of a chance do you think a car would have against a monster vehicle like that?!?!

I’ve always been pretty good about obeying traffic laws but I have become even more aware of things since our daughter began driving about six months ago.  When I see people do these things around me I always wonder what would have happened if my daughter had been driving.  It’s scary!  I know it’s not the right thing to do but I want to yank these people out of their cars and yell at them and try to get through their heads the fact that they are endangering people’s lives when they do that!

You know, I don’t necessarily think that the accident rate for teenagers is so high because they are driving recklessly or carelessly.  I think a lot of it is caused by adults who are so wrapped up in their own little world that the don’t pay attention to anything but themselves.  These poor kids without much experience don’t have a chance – just like that seventeen year old boy – when confronted with situations like these.  They don’t have the reflexes yet or the experience to always know what to do.

So, the whole point of this is – if you are driving and you come to an intersection where the light is red or yellow PLEASE STOP!  You might just save someone’s life by doing so.

Okay, I’m getting off my soap box now.  Thanks for putting up with it.

  1. Hi,

well I drive everyday twice I-81 45 minutes one way to work. And every day yous ee the women putting make-up on, combing their hair, talking on cellphones, and not paying attention to the traffic at all.

    It is horrible!

I am in 100% agreement with you

    Love Andrea

  2. Totally agree, MLBAH!

When I learned to drive, my father (whose accident rate is about one accident per million miles driven – amazing) told me to always watch out for the other idiot. Look both ways before going through an intersection in case someone runs a red light. Move over on the highway in case the person getting on the on-ramp decides to cut over quickly. Etc. (I haven’t been as good about it these days as I used to be….)

Andrea – not sure which state you are in, but I-81 can be an… interesting drive. Some of the drivers set cruise control at 85. Some *trucks* set cruise control at 85. It’s beautiful, but I wouldn’t do my make-up there. (I save that for the red lights or I-95 parking lots.)

I live in VA, and yes to setting cruise control to 85…i do have to admit at night about midnite i used to set my cruise to 80 too because it is not THAT much traffic, mostly trucks…but I got caught. The cop was real nice and let me go to my amazement. After that my cruise is set to 68 (limit is 65) :)

  3. Hi, Andrea! Good to “see” you again. :) Yes, it’s horrible that people do things like that! I just don’t get it!!!

  4. Your dad taught you well, theo! Those are definitely good things to know.

The way people “merge” onto highways is another thing that gets my blood boiling!! For some reason, most people seem to think they have the right of way when entering the highway and they just move right on in no matter what. That’s not what merge and yield mean!!

  6. Yes, it has been awhile! I was kind of out of it for quite awhile too. I’ve just been getting back into it recently.

Sorry to hear about your illness. I’ve been dealing with some medical issues too. I should have all that resolved and fixed by the end of the month though. :)

    Good to “see” you!! :)
