Merry Christmas!!

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (1)

I won’t be on here for awhile because I will be celebrating Christmas with my family and friends. I wanted to wish you all a very merry Christmas though! I hope that you enjoy this holiday and that you remember what the true meaning of this season is -the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus

1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register. 4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Shepherds and the Angels

8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”

15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Jesus Presented in the Temple

21On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived. 22When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]), 24and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c]

25Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31which you have prepared in the sight of all people,
32a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel.”

33The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

36There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e] She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

39When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

41Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. 42When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. 43After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” 49“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

51Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Awesome weekend!

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

What an awesome weekend I just had. Christmas time is such an enjoyable time of year for me and this weekend was at the top for things I like to do at Christmas. Yesterday I stayed in all day – I can’t imagine getting out on the Saturday before Christmas and shopping! 8O Anyway, I stayed in all day and prepared all kinds of good food for our Christmas celebrations. My kids and I also made cookies and cut them into Christmas shapes and then decorated them and ate them. :) (We didn’t eat all of them! Just a few.) While I was cooking and baking I listened to some of my favorite Christmas music – Selah’s “Rose of Bethlehem,” Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve and Other Stories,” and Josh Groban’s “Noel” among others. The Josh Groban CD was special too because I just heard it for the first time in a store on Friday and really liked it and my sweet hubby went out yesterday morning and bought it for me. He spoils me so. ;) At the end of the day when I was completely exhausted I cozied up on the couch and watched “Christmas with the Kranks” – one of my favorite Christmas movies.

Today started with my mom coming over and we made a FABULOUS breakfast that we all enjoyed. Did I say it was FABULOUS? :) After that we went to church and enjoyed a great morning of worship. We had a guest music group and they were really good! Our pastor is an awesome teacher and always has a great message and he didn’t disappoint this morning. After church we headed back to our house and pulled out all the good food we had prepared ahead of time and made a couple of last minute things and then we enjoyed a great lunch together. Next were the presents! We exchanged gifts with my mom and had a lot of fun watching each other open them. After my mom left I cleaned up the kitchen and then went and cozied up in my bed and watched a movie. After I finish up on here I think I’ll go right back in there and get cozy again. :)

I hope everyone else had a wonderful weekend! Feel free to share what you did in the comment section! :)

I received this in an e-mail and wanted to share it with you!  It’s so very true!

THE TOP TEN PREDICTIONS FOR 2008…

1. The Bible will still have all the answers.
2. Prayer will still work.
3. The Holy Spirit will still move.
4. God will still inhabit the praises of His people.
5. There will still be God-anointed preaching.
6. There will still be singing of praise to God.
7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.
8. There will still be room at the Cross.

Bible reading

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (4)

Neil had a great post the other day about daily Bible reading and after reading it I wanted to share with you about a cool Bible I have. It’s called The Daily Bible: New International Version: With Devotional Insights to Guide You Through God’s Word. I’ve been reading it and I love it! Not only is it in chronological order but they have little commentary sections each day to explain things and it’s very helpful!

The main point of Neil’s post, however, was reading through the Bible in a year and that’s another reason I like this Bible. It helps me know how much I should read each day in order to work through the Bible in a somewhat decent time period. I’ve read through the Bible before (I can’t remember how long it took me the first time) and I’ve spent time just studying specific books and jumping around but I’m really looking forward to reading it chronologically. I also read a Psalm and a Proverb each day as well as a chapter in a Christian book. I’ve been doing this for about a month now and it’s working very well for me!

What about you? Do you have a non-traditional Bible that you really like? Do you have a specific way you like to do your Bible study each day? Please share! :)

Some new links

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

I’ve added two new links to my site that I wanted to share with you.

CD swap is a site where you can list CDs from your collection that you no longer want and in exchange you can request CDs that other people have listed that you want to add to your collection. It’s a great way to eliminate the CDs you no longer listen to and find new music that you’re interested in! If you use my link here or on my sidebar and join, I’ll get a credit added to my account so if you decide to join I would appreciate the referral! :)

DVD swap works just as CD swap only with movies! There are a lot of great movies listed and it’s cheaper than renting! Then, if you decide you like it – you can keep it. If you don’t want to keep it, list it again and earn yourself another credit.

And of course I still have paperback swap linked on here. I have been a part of this book club for over a year now and it has been amazing! I have sent out almost fifty books and have requested almost thirty! It’s a great way to add to your library as well as share books that you are no longer using with others who want them.

So, check these out and join today!

Christmas traditions part 2

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

I love reading about other people’s traditions and Aaron had a great post with some great comments about how everyone celebrates Christmas. I thought I’d carry it over here and share mine and see how those of you who read my blog celebrate.

We start out celebrating on Christmas Eve with my husband’s family. They used to live in the same city as we do and we would have our gathering in the evening after going to church but they live out of town now so we do it earlier in the day so that we can get home at a decent hour. We always cook a large (normally traditional) meal and have a good time cooking and then eating together. After that the kids always read to the family. When they were really little they would read one of their favorite Christmas books – The Tiny Star or The Story of Christmas but as they’ve gotten older they’ve switched to reading the Christmas story straight out of the Bible. After they get through reading then we exchange gifts and there is total chaos as presents are opened and wrapping paper goes everywhere! :)

Our immediate family celebrates together on Christmas morning. It has become a tradition for my husband and my son to say we should open a present early (they usually start saying this way before Christmas Eve  ) but we always wait until Christmas morning. On Christmas morning we all get up together – sometimes the kids wake up first but a lot of times hubby and I are the first ones to wake up and we lie there in anticipation wishing the kids would hurry and wake up so we can go give them our presents! Once we are all awake we all go into the living room together to see what “Santa” brought and to open the gifts that we got for each other. I always make sure I’m armed with the video camera and the regular camera to make sure and capture everything on tape and film! ;)

(Santa is in quotes because my children haven’t believed in Santa for a long time but we still fill stockings and have something in front of the tree from “Santa” that they see when they walk in the living room.)

That reminds me though – my husband’s family always wrapped Santa gifts when he and his siblings were kids. In my family it was just sitting in front of the tree. What do those of you who have Santa gifts do with yours?

Anyway, after we open gifts we normally have a snack and start getting dressed to go to my mom’s house. Once we get there we have breakfast/brunch with my mom and my sister and her family. After we eat we all exchange gifts with one another and have fun watching everyone open their presents. About mid-afternoon we come back home so that the kids can play with whatever they got for Christmas and we just sit at home and relax together for the rest of the day.

What about you? How do you spend Christmas Eve and Christmas day?

Spirit of Christmas award

Posted by: momlovesbeingathome | Comments (0)

santa-award.jpg

My bloggy friend, Missy, has been ever so sweet and has awarded me with the Spirit of Christmas Award. Isn’t that cool? (To see where the award started go here.)

This is my favorite time of year and remembering what Christmas is all about is very important to me.  I’ve been trying hard to stay focused on what really matters and not get caught up in the consumerism that goes on at this time of year.  I do love to give gifts to family members but I want the gifts to mean something.  I’ve loved reading other people’s blogs to hear about neat traditions and ideas for Christmas time so for that reason the blogs I pass this award on to are:

Galvanized for a great post about gifts kids can make (she’s got another really cute post about Santa too!)

Karen for showing how special it is to create things with your kids – and you can even win a competition with what you create too! (she also has a great post about the perfect Christmas)

Real World Martha – she’s got so many cool Christmas posts I can’t link to just one! :)

Merry Christmas everyone!
